Anxiety
Anxiety is a common cause of stress for people of all ages, and can take many different forms. If you are experiencing persistent worry that interferes with your daily life, therapy can provide you with strategies to help manage your symptoms and gain a deeper understanding of your experience with anxiety.
Why Therapy?
Therapy provides a safe environment to let you express thoughts and feelings you might not have a chance to discuss in your daily life. Together with your therapist, you set goals and work toward them to grow and learn more about yourself. Your therapy journey will depend on what you would like your experience to be, and will be catered to your unique needs.
Adolescents
If you have ever asked a teenager to tell you about themselves or what they’re thinking, you know that it rarely results in an enlightening conversation! Working with teens, the therapist uses games and expressive tools to help facilitate conversation and build rapport.
Lesa Gonzalez, MA, LPC
It’s nice to meet you! I enjoy offering support and a listening ear to people of all ages. I believe that we all have a unique story to tell, and I consider myself fortunate that my clients entrust me with those stories. I have almost two decades of experience providing support to children, adolescents, and their families, first through education and now through private counseling. I would be happy to speak with you to see how we might work toward your goals together.
LGBTQ+ Support
As a population that encounters a significant amount of stigma and discrimination, the LGBTQ+ community suffers from chronic stress and difficulties that are unique to their experiences as queer individuals. Whether it’s due to navigating major life changes or from traumatic experiences, therapy can help provide a safe space to talk about your needs and experiences. I am trained in cultural competencies focusing on the LGBTQ+ community, and have experience supporting trans individuals through social and medical transitions. I am committed to using my position as an ally to support the LGBTQ+ community’s unique needs through therapy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Counseling seems intimidating, what can I expect?
Despite how it is sometimes portrayed in tv and movies, counseling doesn’t consist of lying on a couch and being interrogated! The process of counseling consists of conversations between you and your therapist, where you are able to explore your feelings and beliefs in a safe environment. You are always in control of what topics are discussed and what goals are set.
Is everything we talk about in our sessions, kept confidential?
My duty to you as your counselor is to protect your privacy. I will not divulge information you share with me, except in circumstances where there is a risk of harm to you or to someone else, or when a court order requires that I provide information.
How regularly do we meet and for how long?
This really depends upon your schedule. Typically we would have sessions every week or every two weeks. Sessions generally last 50 minutes.
I don’t know if I need counseling, how can I determine that?
You are welcome to schedule a session to allow you to get some information about how counseling works, and to see if you feel the therapist is a good fit. There is never an obligation to continue seeing a therapist, if you don’t want to continue.
What are your special focuses or areas of expertise?
I have experience working with clients to address anxiety and depression, as well as helping make adjustments to new life circumstances. I am happy to schedule a phone consult with you to discuss your particular circumstances to determine if I might be the right therapist for you.
